Compare common necklace lengths, understand where each style usually sits, and select the proportion that best complements your neckline, pendant and layering style.
Choose the look you prefer
The same necklace can sit differently depending on neck size, body proportions, chain thickness and pendant weight. These descriptions show the usual placement.
Close to the neck
Usually rests around the base of the neck.
Everyday favourite
Usually sits near the collarbone and suits most necklines.
Below the collarbone
Offers a slightly longer and more relaxed appearance.
Upper chest
A versatile length for prominent pendants and layering.
Long pendant style
Usually falls around the upper to mid-chest area.
Where will each necklace sit?
Shorter chains draw attention toward the neck and collarbone. Longer lengths create a relaxed vertical line and offer more room for pendants or layered styling.
A close choker-style fit. Suitability depends strongly on the wearer’s neck circumference.
Usually sits around the base of the neck, above or close to the collarbone.
Generally reaches the collarbone and is the most versatile everyday necklace length.
Usually sits below the collarbone and gives pendants more breathing space.
Creates a longer pendant, matinee or layering style across the upper and lower chest.

How to check your preferred necklace length
You can compare a necklace you already own or preview a new length using a flexible measuring tape or non-stretchable cord.
Measure an existing necklace
Unclasp the necklace and lay it straight on a flat surface.
Remove twists or curves without stretching the chain.
Measure from one end of the clasp to the opposite end of the necklace.
Compare the measured length with the available product options.
Preview a length on your body
Cut a non-stretchable cord to the necklace length you are considering.
Place it gently around your neck without pulling it tightly.
Check its placement while wearing the neckline you plan to pair it with.
Allow additional visual space when the necklace will carry a large or heavy pendant.
Consider how you plan to wear it
Your neckline
Shorter chains complement open necklines, while longer chains can sit naturally over higher or closed necklines.
Pendant size
A larger pendant often looks more balanced on a slightly longer chain with additional space around it.
Layering
For clear separation, choose necklace lengths with enough difference to prevent visual crowding.
Neck circumference
Close-fitting lengths such as 14 and 16 inches require more careful consideration of neck circumference.
Body proportions
The same chain length may appear shorter or longer depending on height and upper-body proportions.
Everyday versatility
An 18-inch necklace is usually the safest starting point when you want one length for regular wear.
The necklace should complement you
The right length should feel comfortable, sit where you expect it to, and leave enough room for natural movement without pulling against the neck.
- No uncomfortable pressure around the neck
- Pendant rests at the intended position
- Chain does not disappear beneath the neckline
- Layered chains maintain visible separation
